All change, please.
After much procrastination and faffing, Shinyrainbow.com is finally up and running! That means that this is as good a time as any for me to switch LJ accounts. Reasoning: I set this up five years ago, when Hitchhikers' was very much on my mind. Hence, clare42. Unfortunately, I'm now rather of the opinion that it makes me sound like the forty-second Clare, rather than a Clare who is a fan of Douglas Adams. As such, I've set up a new account: clarehooper! Enjoy. | | Wednesday, July 5th, 2006 | | 7:22 am |

EngD preparation
So next week I'm meeting with my industrial and academic supervisors, so we can talk about how we're going to approach this doctorate of mine over the next four years. I haven't done an EngD before, and neither Dave nor Andy has supervised one. I've been talking with Andy via email. He's sent me a picture of a shiny rainbow (with llama) for my website (which really will have content soon, I promise!), and also links to Wight Llama Treks and a podcast giving a bit of insight into the stuff he does. I'm looking forward to meeting him next week! | | Sunday, June 25th, 2006 | | 9:17 am |

Recycling plastic packaging
Anyone got any ideas of what best to do with plastic postal bags and bubble wrap? Southampton City Council don't appear to deal with them ( y'see?), and I don't have a use for them myself. | | Thursday, June 15th, 2006 | | 10:11 am |

And I'm done
Just handed in the last bit of coursework for my degree. That's my lot. Odd feeling... | | Saturday, June 3rd, 2006 | | 9:21 am |
Website to be
Nate happens to have blogged about making websites in Tinderbox. In a fortnight's time, my degree is done, and Shiny Rainbow might actually get some time spent on it. Perhaps even in Tinderbox... There's still the question of my approach to blogging. I'd like to keep an open workblog up on the website, and maintain LJ as a mostly flist-locked social tool... now, if I use Tinderbox for the workblog, I can access and search through my own content very easily. But, a neat alternative is to use the WordPress/LJ cross-poster, and have work-related posts on both sites. Decisions, decisions... | | 9:19 am |

A new blog (a random one, at that)
Huge Dan pointed me here, saying that that kind of post in that blog made him think of me in 9 years time. I can see what he means: from where I am right now, I'd adore being there in 9 years time! Also found an interesting post about polymaths and specialists - relevant to my earlier post about interdisciplinary stuff, she remarks that: most creativity comes from around the boundaries of a discipline where fields of expertise overlap, it comes from the edges of the known not the comfortable centreDamn, another blog to start reading. How do people control the flow of information? Just gotta prioritise, I guess. As Suw remarks in her blog, just as with TV/radio/movies, we aren't obliged to read all of a particular blog - just to tune into the posts which are of interest. | | Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006 | | 3:59 pm |

Second Life
So I've been reading up on learning spaces. One paper mentioned something called Second Life. It looks fun! I think it could well be one of those things that sucks up time, but you don't quite realise until it's far too late... There's a version for Mac, too. :) | | Sunday, April 9th, 2006 | | 5:16 pm |
The Cowherds, Southampton
Just a note: I discovered, yesterday, that the Cowherd's fresh OJ + cranberry juice is amazing: really refreshing and tasty! If you live in Southampton, I recommend giving it a try. :) | | Wednesday, April 5th, 2006 | | 3:35 pm |
Spring
A beautiful sunny day, warm (out of the wind). Greenery vibrant, bumble bees waking. Spring! | | Monday, April 3rd, 2006 | | 11:00 pm |

Sketchbooking (2)
I've stretched (well, attempted to discover!) my sketchbooking muscles over the last little while, in Fleet, Southampton and Oxford. Although my drawings leave plenty to be desired, they convey the moment, at least to me! I feel as though I'm enjoying my travels more, too, from paying more attention. I didn't have the time to draw everything I saw from my Witney-to-Oxford bus yesterday, but I at least got a few things, and noticed more - a canal sparkling in sunshine, the flash of a red postbox as we zipped by, birds' nests up in a still-bare tree. It's all good. | | Wednesday, March 15th, 2006 | | 12:10 pm |
Ups and downs
The bad news of today is that the Isle of Wight festival has sold out all of a sudden (well over a month earlier than last year). Alisdair and I have tickets, but some of our friends, who planned to come along, do not. Bum! The good news is that the EngD is sounding really cool. I'll spend an average of 2.5 days a week at the company, but that's very much a flexible average, so I can work around lectures and academic stuff; I'll be working in the area of pervasive messaging technologies (woohoo!); and although I haven't met my manager yet, he sounds like a dude. Bring on October. :) Edit: The down has turned into an up. The three people in question have, somehow, got hold of tickets for the festival. Horray! |
